Following suit of their previous tour (The Night Is Young, 2005), Evermore’s latest tour ‘Welcome To Real Life’ is nothing short of a visual spectacle. The energy that the three Hume brothers (Jon, Peter and Dann) exert in their live shows is exhilarating. Friday night’s show at Sydney’s latest venue ‘The Forum’ was certainly no exception. It’s a shame that their first support act, The Hampdens were so drowned out by the muttering of the crowd. The band appeared to have some really great material and would have been better as a support for someone along the lines of Sarah Blasko, Bernard Fanning or Missy Higgins. Evermore’s young, rock/pop loving crowd appeared bored if not confused by their first support, especially with the lack of crowd interaction. It wasn’t all bad though, lead vocalist Susannah Legge’s voice was outstanding and well worth a mention. The second support, Bob Evans (aka Kevin Mitchell of Jebediah) walked onto the stage with one of the classiest intros I’ve seen in a long time and a huge resounding scream from the crowd. Adorned with his self-decorated acoustic guitar – which featured a West Coast Eagles’ sticker and photos from the Bob Evans chain restaurant in America – Evans fitted right in with the crowd. From the very first note, of the very first song it was clear that Evans was a crowd favourite. With his catchy, poppy yet folksy, honest songs Evans held the crowd’s attention for the entirety of his set. Songs such as Nowhere Without You, Don’t Walk Alone and Don’t You Think It’s Time were well met by the audience with audience members dancing and singing to almost every song. However, Evans wasn’t the only star of his set, he also made a note of mentioning that his keyboard player’s black shirt was the exact shirt worn by Eskimo Joe’s Kav in the ever popular video clip for Black Fingernails, Red Wine, this saw a flock of people pushing to the front to ‘touch’ the now famous shirt. Lastly, I think Bob Evans and his band are the only people to ever get a resounding applause from a pop/rock audience for playing Greensleeves (yes, the same song the ice cream van plays when it comes down your street in mid-summer) on flute. In summary, Evans set was fun and made for a good warm up before Evermore. As always Evermore’s set started with an intro/crowd warm up song. The chosen song? A cover of  Stand By Me, a call to arms for the crowd who instantly began singing along. For a second, I felt like I was in a group karaoke competition. I was having far too much fun already and the band wasn’t even on stage, let alone playing. The moment they stepped on stage the atmosphere in the venue changed. Starting their set with the album opener Real Life, you could tell that everyone was in for a good night. With lead singer/guitarist Jon asking the crowd to help him sing during the band’s popular ‘OC featured’ track, It’s Too Late, bass/keyboard player Peter using his keyboard as though it was a bass and swinging it around the stage and drummer Dann letting loose on some of the most energetic fast paced drumming I’d seen in a while and most importantly interacting and playing to the crowd – the brothers Hume were certainly giving their all.Throughout their set which featured songs such as their current single Light Surrounding You, power rock ballads like the popular Running, as well as Unbreakable and older tracks such as Slipping Away from the band’s first ever EP the audience were treated to some perfectly timed videos/slides; one of which featured photos that fans themselves had sent in. The highlight of the night? Seeing lead singer/guitarist Jon share his limelight with his two brothers allowing his youngest brother Dann to step up to the microphone to play Goodnight Is Not The End solo on guitar and his other brother Peter to take the role as lead singer on Inside Of Me which left the crowd refreshed, if not astonished at the skill and talent of the two brothers who would usually only be seen in the background. However, If you’re buying the live recorded album at the end of the night (if you’ve not already heard, every gig is being recorded live and you can buy it at the conclusion of the show) expect this part of the set to be missing. My only piece of advice to anyone who is soon to attend an Evermore gig… the lighting is really bright and hot. Hence, if you’re not feeling the best don’t stand in the front row; you’ll find that it induces a headache.Overall, the ‘Welcome To Real Life’ tour is definitely worth checking out.
