The first band on stage was Jack Nasty Face. A glamorous, theatrical, dark, thriller-esque Rockabilly/Experimental rock band from Sydney. They set the pace with Jack Nasty (Lead Vocalist) and a Preacher/Teacher Nick Cave vs. Johnny Cash ooze of mentality.
The rest of the band (Binx – drummer that underneath that cute innocent look has a lot of anger and plays hard, Shibby - the bass player who grooves in his own world and Jacob Sly - the reserved Alaskan whose tripped out solos were on equal par with his outlandish sideburns.)
Ju Ju Love and Get Down were by far two songs by this band that immediately stuck in my head. I was pulled into a semi-erotic state of pleasures by this glam group.
The next amusement ride was The Psycho Delmatics. This four piece psychobilly/heavy metal band was a little harder to take. For a 9.30pm start I felt maybe these guys were just a little too loud. With a bumpy start and just a few small technical difficulties with the sound and gear that were just as quickly fixed, Con Psycho and Dave Delmatic were the ones to watch here. From my position, drummer Joe Evil looked as though he was very intent on his reflection in his ride, but maybe I was mistaken – this could have been pure concentration.
I found the crowd divided, one side of the room was mesmerised and getting off on the heavy thrashes versus the beach wave. The other not so much. Dave Delmatic drew my friend’s attention with his tight leathers and zebra print underwear. In one word this band was Violent, in two: Jam Central.
The Intercontinental Playboys were up next; these men were a little more classic with their style, very Psychedelic meets Jungle meets Las Vegas. Michelangelo and his Hammond Organ delivered a brand new sound to my ears. With their good mix of tempos and their bluesy guitar licks, I was very impressed to see such a mix of 50s swing dancing and modern age hip swinging and body bopping.
Exit Sign was definitely a highlight and would be what I’d call ‘radical’. Think Brian Ferry and The Cramps and yet at times New York Dolls and even Iggy Pop comes to mind. All in all I would be quite excited to see these boys again.
The next band is one I had waited with anticipation to hear. I had only heard good things being passed around my circle of the pretty made up heads of Brigitte Handley and the Dark Shadows, and Brigitte’s trails around the US.
The all-girl band of the night stood in front of a lot of swaggering men and women, without any fear – these ladies were erotic, dark, powerful and very melodic. Opening with Alien Movies which is currently being played on Rage, and rounding up with Lets Go Psycho where Brigitte pulls off a very impressive onstage orgasm.
Meredith the stand in drummer for the night, may be small but my goodness can that girl play hard and fast. Brigitte’s vocals were clear and loud with much likeness to the classic female rockers like Suzi Demarchi. Carly Chalker the last but not least member of the trio (bass) had the males drooling over her and her enthusiastic finger workings.
From spine-chilling Requiem to psychobilly Identity which features on the 48 Shades soundtrack, I very much suggest you check these girls out while you can.
The Headliners of the night were The Nervous Wreckers at 12.30am. Jordan (Guitar/Vox), John (Double Bass) and Aaron (Guest drummer from Zombie Ghost Train). These very debonair boys were exactly what was necessary to take us all to the end of the night. With their diverse range of tempos, song themes and audience interaction. However quieter these cool cats pay tribute to the classic music that inspired youth of the 50s and 60s to rebel and take charge.
Jordan’s vocals are smooth and precise like a young crooner or Elvis. John’s slap bass solos are spot on even though this boy has two looks, pain and pleasure that he switches between quite frequently.
Starting us off with Try to Get Up, which is a very catchy and relatable song for all the young lovers out there, and further along the track my personal favourite Cry a softer more melodic song which is bound to either make you do just that, or at the very least put a lump in your throat. Another song to listen out for is Please Momma Please which like most of their tracks has a slight country feel to it, of which I must say I’m not a huge fan normally, but I left the Empire that night slightly converted.
The boys finished off with a tribute to the King, with Viva Las Vegas a perfect finish for the night by these very talented young men.
