The Beautiful Girls @ theAnnandale Hotel (26/6/06)

The Beautiful Girls were playing a show on Monday night at the Annandale Hotel. Monday! Who goes to a gig on a Monday night? Imagine my surprise when I finally get inside the venue and it’s absolutely packed. Seriously, hardly any room to swing back and forth.
The Fumes were first on, and wow, these guys were a surprise. Imagine if the Mess Hall completely surrendered to their rockabilly dark side and decided they were going to stage a hoe-down at the farm. This duo was perfectly in sync with sweet catchy songs, brilliant solos and an old school sound.
The Beautiful Girls opened with their haunting tune ‘Blackbird’, which swells and dwells in Matt’s simple lyrics and the syncopated reggae-feel guitar. Well, that sort of music is ok if you’re chilling on a Sunday afternoon, but we were packed into an inner city venue on a school night, ready to make the most of it. The boys rose to the challenge and brought the tempo and tone up with their signature tunes such as ‘Long Way Home’ and ‘Music’.
The crowd really dug the sound, everyone was singing along at some point, especially when the chorus kicked in for ‘Music’: “Music takes away my pain, music and I get it every every every day”. The audience were super appreciative of the drummer’s melodic solo, which demonstrated his musicality.
Matt thanked the crowd for coming out on a Monday night. He then devoted the last two songs to the Socceroos, which closed the show on a high.
