Beasts of Bourbon @ TheGovernor Hindmarsh, Adelaide(25/05/06)

I don’t think the Beasts of Bourbon could have picked a better venue to suit the band’s style anywhere in Adelaide except The Governor Hindmarsh. With a steady crowd trickling in early, ranging from some of the bands original fans from back in the early 80s to people who are younger than the band themselves (Been around for almost 23 years!) everyone seemed to have a beer in hand, sharing yarns about when they last saw the Beasts play live.

Following rave reviews from the group’s Big Day Out performances this year, everyone was amped up waiting for them to take to the stage. In true rock n’ roll fashion the group’s roadie put numerous beers by the microphones as Tex Perkins, the grand daddy of Aussie rock, lead the band onto the stage, cigarettes hanging from the side of his mouth as the crowd went crazy.

Opening the set with ‘Low Road’, ‘Bad Revisited’ and ‘Make Em Cry’, Tex and the gang seemed to be getting warmed up quiet well. As the beer flowed and spilt all over the stage you would not have wanted to be anywhere else. Tex belted out the passionate sounding ‘Saturated’, followed by the sing along anthem, ‘Ride On’ to huge crowd applause. As the set went on Tex got the crowd more involved by swinging the microphone around and into the crowd, only to have a happy fan grab it and belt out a couple of lines to the song. Also to feature in the Beasts’ swamp pub rock extravaganza were the songs, ‘Strait’, ‘Chase the Dragon’ and ‘Just Right’.

It was a bit disappointing that some of the older generation of punters thought that it was a great opportunity to leave the kids with the baby sitter, get off their heads and then proceed to act like dicks for most of the evening. Having said that, we have all been there!

A solid performance by the Beasts of Bourbon. With Spencer P Jones, a true showman, looking happy to be on the road with the boys again, along with Brian Hooper, walking stick in hand really making the night a great performance. Not their best show ever, but one hell of a show none the less.
