Glam rock on a Sunday night, it’s a concept of dreams. Well actually it’s a concept that New York City band Diamond Nights came up with for its Brisbane fans – thanks guys. Nonetheless they fill the Troubadour better than your average Sunday night band. Which is a relief, because long hair and making love to your guitar to an audience of five members, is not hot.
One of Brisbane’s more popular bands, Flamingo Crash warm up the some 30 audience members. Known for their filmmaking and matching outfits, the films were absent tonight but the outfits were definitely matching! It’s hard to pin point exactly what genre of music F.C fall under. You could call it reggae/rock/pop/electro plus some. They are very much all over the place, but still are very in synch. You get the feeling all members have the same ideas and influences musically, which probably explians why they are so tight as a band. Lead singer Issac flails around like a latino version of Pelle from the Hives to new song Toys, which is a pop/rock plus some song.
“We’re Diamond Nights and we are from New York City,” proclaims lead singer Phalen. “And it’s Sunday night, jesus who invented this day?” Well I’m glad someone else noticed this ridiculous situation. However, when Diamond Nights kick into their first tune, it seems it could be Saturday night every night for Phalen. Into the audience he jumps, making the small little Troubadour mosh pit dance and sing, filling the air with much needed excitement. Diamond Nights have a good old rock ‘n’ roll sound mixed with lovely shirts and skinny jeans, with the wailing lyrics of sexual appeal over the top of it all. Songs about dirty New York City girls, that apparently us Brisbane woman wouldn’t know about [obviously this guy hasn’t treked down to the GPO on a Saturday night], the song jumps with great dynamic and Diamond Nights have this small audience in the palm of their hands. “This song is about last night,” then proclaims Phalen. Well if you were to sing a song about tonight it would go something like, “glam rock on a Sunday night, thought it couldn’t be done, but we all still had fun.”......Or something like that.
