Odd Future @ The EnmoreTheatre, Sydney (24/01/12)
Fri 27th Jan, 2012 in Gig Reviews
With a queue of tall Supreme hats paired with vans and a random balaclava lining up outside the Enmore Theatre on a Tuesday night, it could only mean one thing… an Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All gig. The all ages, pre hump day event began a little tardy but with Syd Tha Kyd minding the decks right before the Golf Wang took over the stage, no one could really complain.
The audience was in a cesspool of teenagers, young adults, sweat and frustration. Hype built up inside the venue as it began to get packed and soon enough you found yourself levitating for a moment or two if you tried to move within the crowd. People were throwing bows, and chanting the collective’s name.
The roll call for the night included Tyler, The Creator, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Domo Genesis and Mike G, with the mischievous Jasper Dolphin, beloved Earl Sweatshirt and the soulful Frank Ocean absent on the night. It was also refreshing to see Taco present as he didn’t make the previous performance with the Tron Cat crew in Sydney.
The last time the Odd Future collective was in this city was for Vivid Festival 2011 at the Sydney Opera House. Since then, it has become apparent that the Wolf Gang has moved up in the ranks of recognition among Australians with 2012 demanding a position in the BDO lineup and a sideshow event at a much bigger venue.
Sandwitches with Tyler and Hodgy was among the first tracks to play while the audience convulsed, jerked, jumped and threw bows to channel all aggression. By the time the OFWGKTA blared Bitch Suck Dick, everybody was covered in sweat and had at least copped one or two intense grinding sessions from fellow crowd members. Radical reverberated towards the end and it was a queue for all to well and truly lose their shit by jumping, krumping and tossing bodies. Yonkers took no prisoners either with Tyler requesting only red lighting for the duration of the hit. A sense of belonging struck everyone as the entire venue was reciting the viciously executed lyrics.
The standout talent of the night was that of Mike G who performed an insane freestyle for us and King from his album titled ALI. Mellowhype (the collaboration between Hodgy and Left Brain) was also given a fair piece of the action on the night with the reveal of a couple new songs that are to be released later this year.
The only disappointment of the night was the lack of older tracks included such as Tina (with Taco), Orange Juice (featuring Earl) or Super Market (a Domo piece). However, all in all, the lighting was well choreographed, the OFWGKTA crew was hyphy as usual, the audience was insane and the crowd surfing was rampant. Standard for a night spent with Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All really, and we hope to do it all again soon
