Mariachi El Bronx @ The MetroTheatre, Sydney (25/01/12)

Melbourne based rockers, The Vasco Era sure know how to open a show and how to set one hell of a standard for the main act. Lead by Sid O’Neil’s charismatic stage presence they never fail to please a crowd, playing mostly their latest material and a few old favourites. Throw in a cover of Tom Waits’ Bottom of the World and climax with drummer Michael Fitzgerald standing up destroying his kit during fan favourite Honey Bee and you’ve got almost flawless set.
The Bronx supported Soundgarden at Sydney Entertainment Centre just an hour before performing their own Big Day Out sideshow as Mariachi El Bronx but Matt Caughthran’s voice was still surprisingly sweet. Performing in front of a full house at The Metro Theatre, a place they called their home venue in Sydney, they kicked off their set with their latest single 48 Roses before mixing it up with the older tunes.
Dressed to the nines in traditional Mariachi costume they treated the punters to Litigation, Great Provider, Holy and Matador with the horn section and Caughtran’s banter providing the highlights. Despite the fact that the band had already play two sets for the night, the crowd would not let Mariachi El Bronx rest urging them to come out for an encore, which they did finishing off with Fallen and a song about a greedy son, Clown Powder.
