Cavalera Conspiracy, Lynchmadaand Contrive @ The Metro,Sydney (28/01/12)

First up on the night was Melbourne’s , Contrive who have been around since the beginning of the century being formed by two brothers Paul and Andrew Haug. The trio played a short 45 minute set with songs spanning throughout their two album and two EP discography. Each song was as tight as the next and although there weren’t that many people at the venue when they had started playing, they gave everything they had to their set.

Lynchmada, hailing from Queensland, followed Contrive. Playing an incredibly tight set, the five piece played somewhat of a more modern metal set incorporating fast riffs with slower breakdowns. There was much more of a crowd watching Lynchmada as the time grew nearer to seeing the headliner. With this Lynchmada got the crowd moving with their much heavier style of music. With their quick riffs and brutal breakdowns the band left an impression on many punters.

Cavalara Conspiracy have only been around since 2007 but the brothers Max and Igor Cavalera have been playing together since their early teens, they have played in bands together as well as playing apart since the mid 80s. The two brothers together hold more experience than most bands around the globe today.

Travelling to Australia all the way from Brazil for the first time kicked their set off with smoke covering the stage and percussionist, Igor Cavalera taking the stage. The crowd roared in excitement. Second to take the stage was unmistakably, vocalist and rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera, with his iconic dreadlocks and signature guitar. Next to take the stage was lead guitarist Marc Rizzo and bassist, Johny Chow.

The band started the show as samples played leading into playing the first two songs of their latest album Blunt Force Trauma. The first two songs weren’t quite as familiar to the crowd as the rest of the songs would be. Rizzo showed Sydney how incredible his guitar playing is with his ridiculously fast riffs and incredible sweeping solos.

After the first two songs they started playing off of their first release Inflikted, these songs included Inflikted, Thrasher, Sanctuary and Terrorize. The next song they played was from the Cavaleras old band, Sepultura, Refuse/Resist. This was where the crowd really started to get into it, along with this and Max demanding for a circle pit and for the crowd to jump, the crowd was giving its all. After the Sepultura song the band played another song off their Inflikted album, Black Ark. Next up was another two Sepultura songs, one of which Max invited Paul Haug of the opening band to help out on vocals. The Doom of All Fires and another two Sepultura songs – Inner Self and Troops of Doom – followed.

Although the band was promoting their new album the crowd did not seem to mind that only a small portion of their set so far was off their new album. After this Cavalera Conspiracy played possibly one of their most well known songs and the first released song off of their latest album, .

The crowd chanted the chorus to the popular recent single Killing Inside before I Speak Hate and Sepultura’s Attitude closed the main set. Yet another Sepultura song – the classic Roots Bloody Roots – was aired as a fitting encore to the show. It was a great ending to a night full of metal. Throughout the whole set the band gave their all and the crowd gave back. A lengthy seventeen song set definitely made the band worth the money to see.
