Breakfest @ BelvoirAmphitheatre, 26/12/11
Tue 3rd Jan, 2012 in Gig Reviews
The most awesome day of the year for all fans of anything that makes your feet move dawned on a slowly building breaky Belvoir crowd, Breakfest’s Two Zero One One instalment had finally arrived but would the mixed genre all-star cast pull the crowds of past?.
First up, opening the ever epic and hall of fame-esque, top stage, was local master of ceremonies Blend, before PDMA Female DJ of the Year, Mona Lisa was joined by Wish to rock the funky beats for the “up for it” and appreciative early-bird crowd.
Down in the somewhat empty Amphitheatre main stage, Buda had the crowd reppin a swagger of hip hop intertwined with some tasty broken beats, whilst back on the top deck, the best combination since Vegemite and Crusty Bread, Black & Blunt, were carving it up; it being the beat laden air that separated the decks from the crowd. Micah and Philly Blunt worked the masses and signalled the loudest reaction with the goodness Never Get Enough.
Next up came Illy, the Oz Hip Hop maestro done good, working through tracks from Long Story Short and The Chase. Pictures caught the beauty of the day in a moment of pure lyrical bliss, before It Can Wait left everyone in attendance feeling happy and loving.
Drum and Bass Hospital main man Netsky took to the decks as a bevy of brightly coloured beach balls bounced around the Belvoir basement, working his way through the DNB remixes of Adele’s Hometown Glory and Rollin In The Deep before dipping into his own bag of tricks teasing us with Mellow and Secret Agent.
The breaks started coming thick and fast as A-Skills took centre stage and invited us on an epic journey of tasty switch ups and heavy broken beats, smashing out the Happiness, before busting a feel good mash up of the Chili Peppers Otherside with home-grown heroes Pendulum’s The Island.
Upstairs Scratch Perverts were mashing a messy blend of heaviness with minimal success. Not a set to be put in the highlight reel, but most people had packed out the amphitheatre for the headlines who had come to take the day.
The madness that is Hollywood Holt graced the main stage to announce that the Stanton Warriors had arrived, and they got straight down to business, once again the another batch of white beach balls flowed through the crowd as confetti cannons signalled the celebration.
Holt was an energizer bunny with his continual double fist pumps and his signature growl “Put your fucking hands up!”, no one was arguing as the Stantons made their way through a blistering set, getting the “trigger fingers in the air” before releasing latest tasty treat Get Up, getting all on their feet for a final onslaught.
The day ran smoothly, but some of the feel good vibes of past Breakfests just didn’t seem to be there, the crowd was a little bit thinner, but bring on Breakfest 2012, the best festival without doubt, still packs a punch.
