Gold Fields, Millions, CrashThe Curb @ Transit Bar,Canberra (10/11/12)

A school night it may have been, but that didn’t stop a sizeable Transit crowd having an awesome time with the Gold Fields boys on Thursday night.

Kicking things off were Crash the Curb. They made the most of the always difficult opening spot, giving their all for crowd that may have taken a while to trickle in, but were very appreciative once they got there.

By the time Brisbane kids Millions had got into their set a few brave souls crept out of their hiding spots and started dancing along to an energetic and fun garage/pop set. This was a pleasant surprise to someone who had never seen them play live before, and it should be exciting to see what the future holds for them.

Finally, with little fanfare but much clamouring by sweaty Canberrans trying to dance their way to the front, headliners Gold Fields took to the stage to say hello to us all. Swinging through town as part of their first national headline tour since February this year , the band put on a performance that truly justified all the hype they’ve been getting recently, and the crowd couldn’t get enough of it.

Gold Fields’ front man Mark Robert Fuller was charming and unassuming, chatting a little but mainly just letting the tunes speak for themselves – and they spoke volumes. The band got people dancing, had every single person singing along to every single word, and the highly polished performance saw a seamless transition between songs. The way each song melted magically into another belied the fact that Gold Fields are relative newcomers; the entire set had the same electricity and inspired the same level of excitement as a much more accomplished band.

This time around I was able to enjoy Gold Fields from a comfortable chair on the sidelines at Transit (not particularly cool, but my shoes demanded it), but after the performance I saw (and with the trajectory the band has at the moment), I’m betting next time is going to be standing room only.
