Heavyweight Sounds @ MetroCity, Perth (28/10/11)
Fri 4th Nov, 2011 in Gig Reviews
Kicking off their showcase set, Greg Packer and Assassin injected some beautiful sounds into the swirling Metro City dancefloor with Silent Rain and Sound Kriminal getting the knee highs moving, Packer was on his game, cutting through tunes while original bad man Assassin rhymes flowed and king of brance kept the party moving.
The live vibe buzzed around Metro City as New Zealand’s Shapeshifter took to the main stage, and busted into Higher before the entire crowd took it up a notch for Dutchies. With all five players onstage, it was saxophonist Devin Abrams stole the early part with some killer sax solos.
Lifetime had the crowd joining in for the “Oh Heys” while The Touch slowed it down for the groovers and showed off the vocal prowess of front man Paora ‘P Digsss’ Apera, reppin a beret and never missing a beat. This man in full force is a such a pleasure to listen to.
An instrumental version of Electric Dream was a lot of fun, but then it was time for the Shapeshifter juggernaut to leave with Apera preaching “Peace, Love and Drum and Bass” to a hectic and appreciative crowd as they walked off stage.
Tony Coleman, aka London Electricity stormed the stage in a very suave suit, signalling that he meant business. Rough, bassy, liquid, hospital business. Straight off the bat he launched into cuts from new LP Yikes, then came slower tracks Had a Little Fight and You Gotta be Crazy.
It wasn’t too long before Coleman was bothered by the problems that haunted his set last time, with the vinyl skipping now and again, and once again he addressed the crowd and pretty much dissed any person who’s ever used a CDJ before – nice one Tony.
He dropped the pace for the dubstep (and to keep the needles from skipping) before pouring out Hospital anthems Beautiful Lies and If we Ever before a blistering rendition of Live and Let Die saw him running from stage right to stage left.
When he dropped M Beats’ Incredible the roof nearly jumped off the Metro City structure, with the punters bellowing the “booyakas” with gusto, it was awesome and the pace didn’t drop the DNB remix of One More Time and I Remember keeping everybody on their toes
He ventured back into dubstep territory with Subfocus anthem Hold On before his own uplifting Just One Second had the beautiful crowd in full voice. Before rinsing a little Netsky and the act to follow, Blokhead. As he played out The Hospital Theme, Coleman came to centre stage and brocked the fuck out, this man clearly enjoys what he does and it’s a spectacle to see.
Blokhead came out to a disappointing crowd since most had either left or been ushered out by the Metro Security. They smashed through the anthems that have seen them wipe floors with internationals in the past – Hi Andy C, with smashers The Way Life Used to be and Beyond the Void, for those who bailed, or fell asleep on the couch, you missed the heaviest and best set of the night.
Another successful Heavyweight Sounds for the heads, -gonna be hard to top this all-star line-up, can’t wait to see what the boys at Loaded Dice have in store for us next.
