Kimbra @ The Metro, Sydney(16/09/11)

Kimbra’s collaboration with Goyte on his single Somebody That I Used to Know may have been her recognition tool after it gained commercial success charting nationally and internationally, however Kimbra in the limelight is a force to be reckoned with.

Kicking off the night was Adelaide indie outfit, Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!. Full of raw energy and playing their contagious harmonious style of indie pop, the band got the heart rates and excitement pumping in the crowd. Next up were Melbourne folk rock crew Husky who have been touring busily promoting their yet to be released album. With influences like Beck, Husky easily had the crowd wrapped around their little fingers and had gained everyone’s attention with just their opening chords.

Performing in front of another sold out crowd, Kimbra appeared in a modern-day Cinderella dress and kicked off the show with her back to the crowd opening with hit Settle Down. Kimbra’s charisma on stage and the tightness of her backing band was so effortless; it seemed as if she had been in the industry for years and couldn’t possibly be the meagre age of 20.

Maintaining her liveliness throughout the set with well known tracks like Love is a Two Way Street and Limbo, Kimbra then surprised the crowd with a quick and stylish costume change into a cabaret style red dress. Kimbra knows how to get the crowd wanting more by finishing her set with Cameo Lover, she also knows how to please a crowd by encoring with Samaritan, a song dealing with social issues which she revealed was a personal track to her.

With a feeling that the show went to quickly the crowd hung around hoping for more, however were not left disappointed as they most probably witnessed the next Regina Spektor or Amy Winehouse. Kimbra sings with a black woman’s soul and makes it hard to believe that standing before you is a young artist with a lot of hope and a future in the music industry.
