Tim Rogers, Shane Omara, Leena@ The Governor Hindmarsh,Adelaide (02/07/11)

Tim Rogers hardly needs an introduction and had fans in the palm of his hands apart from a few yobbos who felt the constant need to yell shit out or scream and say how much they love the great man.

Walking out on stage, Rogers armed with his guitar looked like he meant business and was in no mood for shenanigans ‘I’m not listening, I’m at work’ then a further response to the hecklers saying ‘is it going to be like this?’. Suggesting that he didn’t bring any hits he opened with a poem dedicated to the Gov, which set the scene for the next hour and half.

Rogers took fans on a journey through the back catalogue playing a few rare gems and some new tunes which will no doubt make the next solo or Temperance Union release. Whilst the set list had a ‘core’ group of songs which were played there were a couple of deviations and for me the most notable was hearing Forget It Sister, yep that hidden track that rears its head nearly six minutes after Who Takes Who Home at the end of Hourly Daily.

Opening with Paragon Café was just class and the majestic Be Prepared on the trusty electric was awesome. New song I Didn’t Plan To Be Here Either ‘Baby has plenty of legs. Playing with a busted thumb after footy match with the Rock Dogs in the Community Cup last weekend Rogers kept keeping on. After touring with Wilco and wondering what become of them he mentioned that it inspired Hi, We’re The Support Band. ‘Pimply friends’ and the not so good looking influenced Some Fellas Heartbreaker but a Tim Rogers show isn’t just about the music but the razor sharp wit and banter with the crowd. It was the incessant screaming from a drunk slapper that prompted the response ‘I hear enough of that screaming coming out of my bedroom and I’m getting a bit sick of it’. Rogers even mentioned he’d done his Red Cross training and that she should take it easy.

Some of my favourites from the set included You’ve Been So Good To Me So Far, You Just Don’t Do It For Me Friend and Wild One. Shane Omara accompanied Rogers for the majority of the set contributing some stellar guitar work but the focus was well and truly on Rogers.

There were very few You Am I tunes but Damage went down a treat. Twinset tunes Happy Anniversary and Arse Kickin’ Lady From The Northwest seem to be the flavour of the night. Rogers wanted to sing Heavy Heart by himself but the crowd sang in voice anyway. A great little ditty with support act Leena featured in the encore along side the electronic beats in Who You Settin’ House Up For? before saying goodnight and closing with a new tune Spanish Leather.
