Dead Letter Circus, Galaxy @The Zoo (16/06/11)
Mon 27th Jun, 2011 in Gig Reviews
Starting a tad earlier than scheduled- the support act for this evening three piece band Galaxy manage to maintain their energy throughout their set despite the vaguely interested crowd. The Brisbane based alternative-rock/electronic band are a suitable choice of support for the headliners, and are entertaining enough while The Zoo is slowly filling. They receive a decent response from the crowd towards the end of their set.
Headliners Dead Letter Circus are warmly welcomed on stage as they kick off the only show for their Bring Tom Overseas Tour. This tour is to help raise funds to bring their newest member Tom Skerlj to the U.S., after signing a deal with American record label Sumerian Records just last month.
Front man Kim Benzie’s impressively powerful vocal ability has the audience hypnotized mid-way through their opening song. Rob Maric’s delay-soaked guitar textures combined with Benzie’s echo-based vocals sound phenomenal ringing throughout The Zoo’s open windowed venue, treating the pedestrians along Ann Street to an earshot of some very decent progressive alternative rock.
The well-versed crowd were equally as psyched to hear old favourite Tremors as they were to hear Cage, a newer track off their debut album This Is The Warning. The boys cover an extensive portion of their discography, where songs Reaction and Next In Line are major crowd pleasers. As Benzie holds his mic over the crowd to chant chorus after chorus it is obvious that these talented Brisbane boys have a dedicated fan base in their hometown.
