Calling All Cars @ Jive,Adelaide (09/06/11)
Sun 12th Jun, 2011 in Gig Reviews
A couple of hundred punters braved the cold Adelaide night, and were rewarded with seeing one of Australia’s better up and coming rock outfits in Calling All Cars.
The set was pretty long considering tonight’s gig was for a single launch, and the band has only one album.
Starting off with the single Disconnect which fired the crowd up was a grand idea, as then they broke straight in to a new track She’s Delirious which was a bit of a rocker but didn’t reach overly lofty highs.
Then they followed up by another debut album track and single Run Away, which ended up being the format during the night, with a song off the first album and then a newbie chasing it.
If the crowd wasn’t already getting in to the show, singer Haydn Ing asked the crowd to fill the gaps in at the front of the stage and “Get in to it” for the next song Animal. The crowd obliged and the song went off like a frog in a sock.
After the new slower song Worlds Collide, Ing downed a full bottle of Corona before breaking in to an extended version of Little Red Hand.
Again another new track this time No Sleep and it was clear to hear that the newer tracks did not have the impact of the older angsty songs off the first album.
The surprise, and one of the many highlights of the night was cracking out of the McLusky cover of To Hell With Good Intentions.
This was the start of a little flurry of rockers with the next two songs being the singles Hold, Hold, Fire and Not Like Anybody, during which the bad had to get through a stage invasion by The Strangers who “forced” the Calling All Cars boys to scull Vodka and beer together.
The band got it back together for the final song of the night, and the new single Reptile, which was by far and away their best new song of the night.
This band is as tight as a nun’s nasty and as slick as Haydn Ing’s haircut. With great rock riff’s and great rock move’s this band will hopefully go places and be around for a lot longer.
