Washington, Lissie, Deep SeaArcade @ Metro, Sydney(5/5/2011)

Sydney-based band Deep Sea Arcade and American folk artist Lissie joined Megan Washington on her only headlining tour for 201, although Washington told the crowds that “I wouldn’t even call [Deep Sea Arcade supports] ...they are one of my favourite bands”. Performing in Sydney for the first time, Lissie was greeted as warmly by the audience as one would expect for a headliner when she took to the stage. Her performance was warm and inviting, with her hit single, When I Am Alone erupting cheers and applause from the crowd long after it finished.

Between performing at Groovin the Moo, as well as shows off her headliner around Australia, Megan Washington took to the stage clad in black, with her pixie-cut black hair and waif like figure, full of energy, emerging herself completely in her music. Megan Washington and her band, also clad head to toe in black, were greeted enthusiastically by the audience. The dual 2010 ARIA award winner performed songs such as Navy Blues, off her debut album I Believe You Liar, as well as older hits such as Rich Kids and How To Tame Lions, which was definitely my pick for best song of the night. Not only did she perform it with heart, banging out tunes from behind her keyboard and belting out lyrics that had won her the inaugural Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition for her song, but she also captivated the audience who sang along with her, swaying back and forth, couples and friends embraced.

Another song that really stood out as a winner was Spanish Temper, which Washington introduced as a song “about a very bad man”; with her soft voice she sung eerily, “when will you kill me?” sending ripples of excitement through the crowd.
