Elvis Costello and TheImposters @ The State Theatre,Sydney (19/4/11)

Elvis Costello and The Imposters burst out of the stalls at a gallop on Tuesday night at The State Theatre. Hope You’re Happy Now, Tear Off Your Own Head, High Fidelity and Blood and Chocolate were filled with the strength and passion that this outfit seems to always be able to deliver. Davey Farragher* (bass), Professor Steve Nieve (keys) and Pete Thomas (drums) are all the ammo that Elvis needs in his arsenal.

With a set list that showcased every facet of his career, Elvis took us on a rich, musically flavoured journey. The solid guitar playing was special and a voice that seems as strong now as it did in 1977. The great pop lyricist was displayed in songs like New Lace Sleeves, Every day I Write The Book; the political points made while playing a fiery Oliver’s Army from Armed Forces and his numerous songs about love and relationships filled out the rest.

With a set list including Clubland from Trust, Monkey To a Man from Delivery Man, Stella Hurt from Momofuku Elvis can deliver a wide array of tunes in one night. In all the years of watching Elvis, and no matter how many different hats he wears metaphorically and literally, he never disappoints. From solo to playing with these steady-as-they-go Imposters, Elvis delivers the goods. Ending with the trio of Brilliant Mistake, a searing Pump It Up and his best cover, Nick Lowe’s What’s So Funny About Peace Love And Understanding, Mr. McManus is still the King.
