Synperium, Mytile Vey Lorth,Tortured, Hellbringer, NewBlood @ The Basement, Canberra(19/2/11)
Mon 21st Feb, 2011 in Gig Reviews
The show opened at The Basement with death metal crew New Blood and from the first blast beat, the crowd that’d gathered were into it. The guys showcased their talent with a short but sweet set full of chunky, face-melting riffs, dark, guttural vocals and some blisteringly fast drumming. This was metal that the fans didn’t have to think about, just bang their heads and enjoy.
Next up were the lads from Hellbringer. Their fast and aggressive brand of metal had the old-school thrash fans deeply satisfied. As they tore through their set, the crowd got larger and more energetic and when they paid homage to Canberra metal legends Armoured Angel with a cover of My Fist, Your Face, the crowd went absolutely nuts. They knew exactly what they had to do to please the fans and had no trouble doing it.
Corpse painted up and ready to break some necks with their insanely heavy style, Tortured were next and as per usual had absolutely no trouble working the crowd. Their set was full of fan favourites and had the crowd singing along and busting out some great pit moves. It was no surprise that these guys had the biggest crowd on the night as they delivered an excellent show.
The guys from Mytile Vey Lorth were next and even though the crowd was smaller than the previous band’s, they played a decent set of ridiculously fast paced songs full of what everyone was craving; chunky riffage, deep, dark vocals and insane double-kicks that would’ve had no trouble inducing an asthma attack. After a few songs, the crowd had warmed up and were furiously head-banging at the front of the stage. As their set came to a close, it was obvious that Mytile Vey Lorth made sure the crowd were glad they had stuck around to see the end of the night.
As Southern Highland lads Synperium took to the stage, it seemed as though a lot of the crowd had taken off. It was a shame they did because the mob who stuck it out were treated to an awesome set of straight up technical death metal. Singer Jason controlled the stage well and knew exactly what to do to get the crowd worked up and rocking out. The brutal style these guys play is flashy and original but completely unpretentious. Their set showed that tech death could be all of these things and still sound amazing; the crowd definitely appreciated the awesome talent they were watching. The set ended the same way it had started, brutal and neck-breakingly fast. Everyone that stayed to check them out was sent home happy, albeit with sore necks.
After Saturday’s show, there’s no doubt that Synperium are on their way to bigger and better things.
