Jim Jones Revue @ The Metro,Sydney (25/1/11)

Well this is a new one. Half the Metro is closed off. No upstairs bar or VIP seats. But the crowd of jeans black tees and rockabilly started to turn up in anticipation of the Jim Jones Revue.

Kim Salmon and Leanne Chock recreate that now classic two piece rock sound. Without making them sound like a cliché copy. They have got a White Stripes/Black Keys thing going on with a more indie grunge feel. One guy who loved it was the old guy running and dancing around the front having the time of his life! Shine Some Darkness On Me was a swampy downtuned affair that was a highlight of Salmon’s set. He let the music do the talking and the music was that good it brought the punters in.

Jim Jones came out and like a preacher in front of a southern gospel choir, lead us through song and scripture. The ultimate showman, he worked the stage, he worked the band and he worked the crowd. He got the room hanging on to every word and every note. The band were flawless. They delivered what Jones was preaching.

Mixing up the tracks from their two records, it was the songs off the latest Burning Your House Down that garnered the best response from the smallish crowd. Tracks like Dishonest John, Burning Your House Down, Killing Spree and Elemental got the crowd singing and jiving along to the 60s rock n roll.

This man is electric and needs to be seen and heard. If you have a soft spot for blues based swagger n’ roll, catch Jim Jones while you can during the Big Day Out. If not, as Rupert mentioned in my chat to him, they’ll be back later in the year, go see them. One of the best live acts you’ll see this year.
