Last time I was anywhere near Philadelphia Grand Jury I ended the night with a (not-so-serious) injury, so it was with a slight amount of trepidation that I arrived at Transit for Canberra’s last Purple Sneakers of the year, which featured a Philly Jays DJ set. However I needn’t have worried, as the only injuries I awoke with the next morning were the result of dancing all night and drinking a little too much. But hey, that’s what Purple Sneakers is all about, right?

Purple Sneakers has been pretty good to Canberra this year, trekking down monthly with a whole host of party-starters, keen to give the capital some action. So it was only fitting that the last hurrah of the year was graced with appearances from Sneakers residents and local spin-doctors alike, along with the afore mentioned guest set.

Representing home grown talent was Architect DJs and Lucky Punk, all pretty schooled on what it takes to get a Canberra crowd moving. On the Sydney front was Minnou, Monkey Genius and Johnny Segment, who all succeeded in keeping the crowd pretty damn excited before the main event.

Fresh from their show at ANU, Philadelphia Grand Jury spun tunes that didn’t allow for sitting down. From start to finish an eclectic mix of hip hop, pop, dance and indie worked its magic over the sweaty crowd and by the time the last song, Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get it On rolled around, it was clear that the Philly Jays aren’t just a talented band, they’re pretty great DJS as well.

Was it worth waking up the next morning realising you had to do Foreshore on one hour of sleep? Absolutely.
