Kicking off the evening playing party beats to keep the crowd moving was local Metro resident Karl Blue, although his set dragged on for a little too long and soon the near on capacity crowd was getting restless, was also funny to note that a lot of 2Pac songs were sprawled out for the “West Side” lovers in attendance.
After announcing Cube was in the building, Blue left the stage only for us to be greeted by next in the warehouse line of a la Dizzee Rascal rappers Scorcher, Known more for his grimy, dubstep beats than his vocal quickness, the crowd grew bored with him rather quickly. Before dropping into Rascal’s Bonkers the “Ice Cube, Ice Cube” chant had begun and it was time for Scorcher to exit stage west.
After what seemed like an eternity, the man all had came to see busted on stage with NWA anthem Straight Outta Compton, and proceeded to work through hip hop anthem after hip hop anthem, year by year. Check Yo Self had people jumping out their seats before, Today was a Good Day brought a little order back to the crowd.
After party classic Bop Gun, things kind of took a turn for the worse, the energy level dropped and the songs seemed to melt in each other, Bow Down worked its way into Cube’s other super-group Westside Connections Gangsta Nation before the song most had came to see got arses shaking: You Can Do It and scanning around the crowd most of the fine young ladies packed in could indeed, “put their back into it”.
Rollin’ through the party track, Cube rolled out Hello and got his own groove on to We Be Clubbin. Why We Thugz rounded out the main set before a few minutes later Cube returned to the stage to spit out Life In California before sealing the deal with I Rep That West.
It was a shame Cube didn’t delve back into more of his awesome 87-94 back catalogue, as after the first half hour he seemed to lose a little spark, but all in all a fantastic showman, one of the greatest gangsta rappers of all time, even if he did wear that hat from “Are We There Yet?”.
