Last Wednesday night may have hit Canberra with rain, wind and rather slippery roads. However, the stay at home weather didn’t stop 400+ from travelling south to catch Amy Meredith and supports play The Maram as a part of their Restless tour across the country.

The first support act, The Take took to the punters straight away. The Sydney group of four boys, opened with a bunch of really catchy pop-rock tunes. The band was addictive to watch and listen to. Returning for the second act was a completely surreal experience. To this reviewer’s wonder, the band revealed that they were The Dirty Secrets (also from Sydney). In appearance this act was like a blast from the past – their sound, from the future and yet inspired by the past. Electronic synth love!

The next break between was long, but the sound guy seemed to keep the crowd entertained. It seemed like he was playing a ‘music for kids who grew up in the 90s’ mix. So to whoever the sound guy was, you have excellent taste in music. Eventually the flow of good tunes couldn’t stop a crowd from getting restless, and the cheers began to get louder and louder: with chants varying of, “Amy! Meredith! Amy! Meredith!” or “Amy!” Clap-clap-clap! “Amy!” Then finally the lights dimmed, the A’s upon the stage lit up, and the band marched on.

The first thing this reviewer noticed was Amy Meredith’s handsome front man Christian Lo Russo... perhaps it was because of his gelled quiff and indie look which complimented his vocals. The set was exhilarating all the way, as all songs were sung with great passion especially Pornstar, Closer, Faded White Dress, and Kiss Me Quick. The favourite was hit song Lying which had its audience singing along. Lo Russo sounded a perfect pitch with the rest of the band. Not only is he an excellent singer, he is an excellent performer: dancing, singing, and charming the audience with witty breaks of conversation: the perfect front man. The rest of the band were equally as charming – sharing the lime light across the stage.

Throughout the set it was incredibly difficult to move. The only way to get around or out of the room was to dance or mosh your way through. Who would have thought passionate fan girl and boys could be so strong together? By the end of the set, La Russo was found up on the drum kit again, jumping around. The crowd was raging with enthusiasm.

Afterwards the band bravely made their way out into the bar area to meet adoring fans. The line for photographs and signings was endless. After an overwhelming turn-out, hopefully Amy Meredith will add Canberra to their next tour.
