Late at Dilettante, a surprise for the showcase line up was The Audreys, a surprise because they have enjoyed national success, an ARIA award and several albums among other things. It is high time they were discovered by an international talent scout and their impressive performance makes it seem all the more likely.
As we crowded into the narrow Dilettante space, it felt as though we were witnessing an intimate conversation; that what was being communicated was so much more than the lyrics. Both Taasha Coates and Tristan Goodall were completely immersed in each song, and each other, as they performed songs that felt genuine and new, despite the fact that they must have played them many times over. The audience, watching the interplay between the two, could be forgiven for inventing all sorts of romantic-tragic notions based purely on the emotion that poured off the stage.
It was a stripped down band they had bought along for the festival, just Coates and Goodall with a multi-instrumentalist who is not in the band. It seems that this is a permanent arrangement, but the return to the original duo has not harmed the sound of the band, if anything it has distilled it into something more powerful, Comfort Me and I’ll take what’s mine being the two stand out examples of this. These two tracks can be found on their latest album Sometimes the Stars which was released here on Thursday.
An enchanting performance by one of the finest things to come out of Adelaide. If there was anyone influential watching in the audience that night the band will surely receive a phone call inviting them to the international stage.
