These guys were frikkin amazing. As they’re no strangers to Perth hopefully you’ve had the opportunity to see them already. The question of where the Dilettante Stage was located was quickly resolved if only you followed the sound; MM9 are, as succinctly put by a passing FL photographer, “Loud.” But they were so much more than that! Tucked away under the stairs, bathed in green and purple lights, this Sydney four piece had their audience captivated, as they successfully merged electro with metal and some killer drum’n’bass beats.

Lead vocalist and keyboard/laptop/gadget devotee Dan Sutherland was so engrossed in the music you could hardly tear your eyes away from him. When he stepped away from his instruments, with sweat pouring off him and tendons stretching, he continued to writhe and move his hands in gestures that seemed to be as much a part of making the music as his vocals.

Spectacular drummer, Ben Ellingworth is an absolute pleasure to see and hear, and he flawlessly blends his digital and acoustic drums to create their signature sound.

Half an hour was not nearly enough to truly witness what they seemed capable of; luckily they had a second showcase on Friday night, for all the unfortunate people who couldn’t go to see them on a ‘school night’. They actually played a full set on 2nd October, so they may not be back for a while, but at least one of us will be keeping their eyes peeled for the next full-length show.
