OMFM Thursday Showcase: NewSaxons

The Wolf lane Car Park stage was pretty busy, with lots of industry type standing around guzzling the free wine and canapés courtesy of Michael “Chuggy” Chugg who was tonight launching his new book Hey You in the Black T-shirt. The venue also doubled as the Triple J offering to the One Movement for Music Festival.

First up was Tasmanian, unearthed band New Saxons. They brought with them a comfortable yacht-rock sound that made you think about going home to get a nice pretentious scarf.

The music was reminiscent of Vampire Weekend, especially Don’t Worry About Tomorrow and Sound Track but maybe a little less calypso, and a little more raw and unpolished (which is not a bad thing!). The quartet played a tight set, but by this time the free drinks had run out, and much of the crowd had begun to migrate towards other venues.

Playing loud music to a big, sparsely populated, concrete car park isn’t really conductive to good acoustics, but despite this, they successfully rocked out, with twiddly guitar fills, creative percussion and pauses in all the right places; and if you like that kind of music, you would’ve had yourself a grand ol’ time.
