Regurgitator’s Distractions tour goes out with a bang in Perth.
Opening the set is Naik. The two-piece instrumental act created some slick psychedelic and hip-hop beats using a drum set and some decks. People started to pack into the room, staking out the best spots to watch The ‘Gurge as Naik continued to make some thoroughly enjoyable dark dungeon electronic sounds.
Next up Boys Boys Boys! were a clear example of what happens when a bunch of kids get a hold of pixie sticks. “Don’t clap, it will only encourage us!” they said. Executing synchronised dance moves and bouncing around in sequinned threads, these bold lasses set the tone for having some wholesome fun. From insanely catchy melodies and swirling electro-rock sounds, a respectable sized mosh pit formed.
With a sigh of relief Regurgitator finally made it to the stage setting out to make you eargasm and eyegasm. A huge range of household rock and hip-hop tracks containing obscene lyrics were in store and a projection screen behind them for some awesome visual effects. Getting right into the groove with I Will Lick Your Arsehole, punters sluggishly bobbled their heads while yelling out the lyrics to the chorus. Lead singer Quan Yeomans had his game face on, grabbing the jaded few and thrust into full energy with ( ).
Projecting on the silk screen was a series of boring pre-packaged foods you’d find in a grocery store during Everyday Formula. Fans and hardcores alike were a scrambly mess, jumping around and banging into each other.
They played their new song Distractions, which recieved a polite response – which is never really what is intended with a Regurgitator song. The crowd randomly chanted “Sex, Sex, Sex!” In response they gave us Black Bugs with some vintage gaming images on the screen. Many obscene drawings of body parts by drummer Peter Kostic flashed onto the screen for I Wanna Be A Nudist. Two minutes of incredibly fast beats had punters madly jerking around their heads and bodies in attempt to keep up. Mixing rap and rock with Hullabaloo had everyone singing the words back, or at least attempting them and a familiar eerie guitar riff had loyal fans in nostalgia for Kong Foo Sing.
Bassist Ben Fly didn’t like the idea of standing visibly at the edge of the stage when it was time for the band to make their encore-inducing exit. There is no backstage to hide behind at the Amplifier Bar, which makes for a more intimate performance. So the walking off stage part of the set was written off.
Finishing up with the set with Making No Sense, My Robot Friend and !(Song formally known as) with Boys Boys Boys! joining them, singing and dancing minimally on the small stage. It proved to be a night of nostalgia, one not to be easily forgotten.
