Cypress Hill, one of the most popular and influential rap outfits to grace the planet, have been regular tourers of Australia so it was no surprise to see them back down under following the release of their latest album Rise Up. The undisputed kings of stoner rap have always had a strong following in Adelaide selling out large venues on their last tours, but the crowd tonight was a little disappointing, not that it made any difference to the quality of show the faithful received. With the release of the new album, you would expect the set to be filled with new tunes, but this what not to be the case and we were treated to a brilliant set of Cypress classics.
First up was Sydney duo Spit Syndicate joined on the laptop by DJ Joyride. Although generally I’m not into new hip hop, these boys were really good, they bounced back and forth dropping some seriously cool beats along the way. Highlights of the set were Lost Boys, Kings Only and a pretty impressive freestyle session. After a pretty short, tight set they said their goodbyes and prepped the crowd for the eminent main event.
By the time Cypress Hill were set to start the crowd had grown to a semi-respectable level (it wasn’t looking good for a while). B-Real and Sen Dog exploded onto the stage wearing matching Cypress Hill leather vests and ripped straight into Hand On The Glock which had the crowd instantly singing along, they followed with When The Shit Goes Down and How I Could Just Kill A Man which kept the crowd cheering. Joining the duo on stage was regular member Eric Bobo on percussion and on the decks, actually spinning discs unlike the modern laptop DJ, the legendary West Coast hip hop DJ, Julio G. Next up was one of the rare sightings of new material, Latina Armada, but it was quickly back to the old with B-Real asking Who you tryin to get crazy with ese? Dont you know I’m loco? The crowd suitably responded by going crazy. B-Real was then handed a giant splif as the opening bass line rang out for I Wanna Get High which turned into a medley of weed songs including Hits From the Bong. The duo played for over 90 mins and further highlights included Throw Your Sack In The Air, Cock The Hammer and Lick A Shot before finishing the main set with A To The K.
The boys came back with an amazing three song encore of Aint Goin Out Like That, the title track of the new album featuring Tom Morello on guitar (unfortunately not in the flesh) Rise Up before finishing the show with the ever popular Rock Superstar and the promise to be back sooner than they were this time.
There couldn’t have been a disappointed punter in the room, except maybe the hand full of punters turfed out for smoking weed during the show, perhaps a little harsh considering the amount being smoked on stage, but rules are rules.
