Regurgitator, Rat vs Possum,Laneous and the Family Yah @The Maram, Canberra (23/09/10)

Well I think I will start by saying how brilliant The Maram is, and what it is bringing to the Canberra music scene since the death of The Green Room. Fantastic sound quality, great atmosphere and unrivalled acts have it well on its way to be set in stone as the favourite rock venue of the ACT.
Laneous and the Family Yah were first up. Catchy, original and varied were their beats. They had you hanging on with the end of one song and awaiting the start of another. Their stage presence was a breath of fresh air. They had every bell and whistle a band could ask for.
Following was Rat vs Possum. I didn’t get it, and neither did punters around me (which helped me with the conclusion that I came to). Most of the time it could only be described as ‘white noise’. Songs separated by drums solos and weird screaming. I think what it was that there was no definition between the sounds they were trying to produce. In contrast to the previous band…..no, actually there really is no comparison.
Headliner time: Regurgitator’s set had a brilliant backdrop that had hilarious stop motion videos which were projected on a sheet. Starting with Track 8 from Unit, the crowd went into call and response frenzy. From the same album they also cracked out Polyester Girl and ended the encore with ! (song formally known as).
Their new material was also well received by the crowd showing us that there is more to come from Australias favourite ‘gurg!
Calling for an encore, the crowd was slightly amused when the band returned to stage in mexican wrestler masks….. Thankfully, it was for one song only as I’m sure it would have been like a little head sauna!
Quan Yeomans is such a sensational front man. His presence and ‘take no prisoner’ energy translates effortlessly to the crowd, who respond with just as much enthusiasm. Not to take away from his sidekick and partner in crime Ben Ely. The two both made for an exciting, memorable gig that Canberra will remember for a while to come.
