With a fist full of local acts, Saturday night at The Rocket Room packed a punch celebrating the release of The Novocaines new single Lovers Teeth.

Hunting Huxley rattled through 40 minutes of vintage, psychedelic instrumental rock (think Wolfmother meets Mogwai). The three piece act prove they have more talent than to just be background music. Throwing in Wolfmother’s Joker and the Thief for good measure, the three piece act drew in a respectable crowd.

Self proclaimed experimental rockers Therapist played it safe with some four chord pop punk riffs and tinkling key work. Jumping around and shredding guitars with knees to the ground, Dreams and Animation had punters bobbing their heads to the drumbeats. Enjoyable enough to watch but really should have taken a leaf out of Hunting Huxley’s book and played without the cliché lyrics.

Without further ado The Novocaines were up on the stage greeted with drunken cheers and greasy hair shaking. Punters primed for some trashy punk riffs, short and straightforward rock tunes to get wild to. The boys have played at big festivals to the likes of Big Day Out, but no matter how small the venue you can trust The Novocaines to give every show their all.

Lead man Corey Marriott is a loaded gun. Pointing fingers in every direction, yelling and screeching into the mic he strangled between his hands. Marriott makes it hard to look away as he jerks his body around in perfect chaos, springing back and fourth like a jack-in-a-box.

Their 2009 single, Cup of Coffee sparked an automatic head banging response from punters. The debut of Lovers Teeth had a similar response of drink spilling madness as punters dance only inches away from Perth’s young bloods. Marriott took the time to plea support by requesting their music on triple j’s, adding that some where in the crowd there is a girl with a fresh Novocaines tattoo on their calf.

Loyal supporters of this local band also enjoyed T8, Ragdoll and We Have Control as part of the set list. Those who were unfamiliar walked away impressed and perhaps with a slight ringing in the ear as well.

The question of the night is: Did anyone get to see the tattoo?
