Friday the 13th, is not a night you want to be home alone. You need to be with people who love you, else you could end up the victim of a brutal incident. However, for a small crowd of Canberra punters, they were treated to a night of brutality of the senses at The Maram, particularly to the ears!

Sydney’s music legends, The Hard-Ons were in Canberra on the back of the bands recently released album Alfalfa Males Once Summer Is Done Conform Or Die. The second last stop on a short run of shows, the band was out to showcase what exactly made them household names to the music industry’s biggest names.

First cap off the rank was local act, Boonhorse, who with their powerful display of thrash metal, got the night off to a loud start. After a few songs, I decided to retreat to the safety of the bar so I was able to save my ear drums before the main event.

Melbourne’s Fangs of a TV Evangelist were next on stage. Inspired by the legendary band, The Melvins, the evangelists played a tight set, engaging the small but enthusiastic crowd who were there to see them.
Judging by the crowd who came to see the Hard-Ons, it was obvious this band wasn’t there to win the hearts of the youth of society, instead at near enough to 30, I was considered one of the youngest in the room.

Playing a range of songs from their years together, the band was tight, with Pete Kostic typically drumming like a metronome, Ray Ahn playing his bass in a trance and Peter Black showing why he is one of Australia’s best front men.

Since opening their doors, the team at The Maram has certainly seen some excellent bands come through their doors, and will Pete Kostic’s “other band” playing in a few weeks time, we’re sure there will be many more nights of excellent entertainment to come.
