Delphic @ Gaelic, Sydney(3/08/10)

Delphic brought their new rave sound to an eclectic crowd on Tuesday night showing that despite a massive festival hangover you can still get loose mid week.

There are weirder places Delphic could pick as a venue for this Splendour side show, but the Gaelic Club in Surry Hills did not seem like a right fit for the trendier than thou sounds of this Manchester four piece. The place felt like a pub where someone had opened portal to the future in the middle of the room, a far contrast from the pseudo hipster venue of their last Sydney gig, the Oxford Art Factory.

Despite the odd choice of venue, Delphic led by the charismatic James Cook managed to work the room and created a vivid and futuristic space that fit perfectly with the songs from their 2010 debut Acolyte.

Tracks such as Counterpoint and This Momentary flowed seamlessly from one to another, the new rave beats encouraged the audience to bounce, dance, clap and occasionally stand really still.

To say the crowd was eclectic would be a understatement, there was the really excited bald guy stage right, middle age English people, a few Surry Hills hipsters and poker room spillage that included a rocking grandma and grandpa duo that parties out especially to the track The Momentary.

The weird Gallic club mix of the masses culminated to provide the reaction the band deserved by the end of the festivities. The night closed with a rendition of the title track Acolyte – an epic and beautifully performed track that had the audience in awe.

Cook pleaded with the audience to dance for the nine minute track and that they did. Delphic has been lauded by all as the band to watch in 2010, this live performance is a reminder that sometimes bands can live up to the hype.
