Fresh footed on her Modern Day Addiction Tour for her forth coming album, Clare Bowditch rocked the Artbar on Thursday night. She’s an interesting storyteller to say the least; Bowditch charmed her way into our hearts with humorously genuine stories of embarrassment, past loves and a little bit of tea pot music.

Western Australia’s Art Gallery was open for viewing as Perth’s Benedict Moleta played to a growing crowd eagerly lining up for the bar. Over loud conversations and chinking of wine glasses, Moleta’s lyrics painted detailed scenes teamed with catchy pop melodies. His music sounded similar to The Mountain Goats and has the potential to be as big in the underground music scene.

Hoisted high above our heads was a gigantic replica of a spider nest and in excellent creepiness, a doll could be seen among the super-sized spider larvae. With the impressive layout and slightly intimidating décor, Bowditch made herself at home.

Warming up her vocals on an older track Divorcee by 23, the red haired songstress had loyal fans swaying and miming the words to hear Bowditch’s seamless vocal range. Between the Tea and Toast, had Bowditch making hollow noises into a teapot by the name of Rufus. Bowditch’s playful and friendly character made for a more intimate feel between the large white walls of the Artbar.

Modern Day Addiction from the new album of the same title, showcased a different musical direction; sounding more disco pop than the rustic folk songs from previous albums. Trying to bring he house to life, Bowditch attempted to get a sing along happening to another disco pop song from the new album, where guys sing one part and the gals sing the other, much like they do in Grease. The response was lethargic and punters were left wanting more easy listening material.

We were given slower paced I Thought You Were God. With such simplicity, Bowditch delivered a powerful emotion driven performance. In a state of awe the audience stood still in silence; her life long partner and drummer Marty Brown moved onto the keys as Bowditch and Tim Harvey harmonised perfectly.

Polishing off the set with two new singles from the new album, The Start of War and Bigger Than the Money which had punters bopping away, enjoying the new sound of the Casiotone keyboard that’s signature to Modern Day Addiction, which comes out on August 13th.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first!
