Passion Pit @ Forum, Sydney(2/08/10)

Despite heavy rain and the cyclonic weather that descended on Sydney Monday night, fans headed in doves to the get their electo synthpop fix via way of Boston act Passion Pit

The Forum at the entertainment quarter was packed with punters who were seemingly frothing at the prospect of seeing the band perform tracks from their first album Manners.

It seems the frothing was warranted, Passion Pit delivered a high energy, fun and engaging performance that exceeded expectations. Passion Pit were able to get the crowd moving from the first beat of their opening track I’ve Got Your Number. The band kept building on their momentum and had us dancing by their second song Make Light clapping by their fourth The Reeling and singing by the fifth Moth Wings.

Lead singer Michael Angelakos, who was dressed in his preppy cardy, exchanged awkward banter with the crowd by talking about the “oddly shaped room” twice (agreed) and declaring that Sydney winters were “not that bad”.

Passion Pit ended the set with Little Secrets which encouraged the crowd to dance plus sing ‘higher’ and ‘higher’ closing the set with the same enthusiasm they opened with.

The band returned to the stage for an encore that delivered what the crowd was expecting, a performance of their first hit Sleepyhead epic enough to warrant losing your shit to. But before they divulged in the aforementioned shit losing, Passion Pit delighted audience members with an epic performance of Eye’s of Candles. The depth of Michael vocals gave me chills during this particular track and it had nothing to do with the draft coming from the back door of the venue. This was followed by with a flawless cover of Dreams by The Cranberries.

This Splendor sideshow is the band’s second in Sydney and judging by the reaction of the crowd it will not be their last.
