The night kicked of with Canberra punk band Yoko Oh No who displayed a ample set of fun fat wreck era punk rock songs with a sense of humour (but of course) and a touch of homage covering Propagandhi favourite Apparently I’m a PC Fascist.
The most disappointing part of the set was that the PA was a humble little vocal PA, and they had their amps up a touch too loud which drowned out vocals with guitars and made a really enjoyable band difficult to listen to. But overall Yoko is an underrated band who don’t get taken seriously enough.
Built on Secrets gave the bill of bands a nice variety of sound with their poppier Circa Survive vibe and catchy lyrics. For such a young band they seem to have the live performing thing down to a tee, so much so that when compared to their CD there is little difference in pitch and key. They interact with the audience like it’s second nature and are all beautiful looking. This band is a marketing goldmine and I would be very surprised if they didn’t get very big very soon.
Next was Canberra sweethearts Dead Kings who belted out a great set after a week straight of touring. Vocalist Zaca Duncalfe has been such a valuable gem to this band bringing with him new life and energy to their performances. He has a better connection with the audience than their previous singer and likes to move around a lot, which makes the audience want to move more.
Guitarist Rohan Todd writes beautiful leads and plays them with infinite care and precision. You can’t help but watch this talented young thing with adoration and praise. The band covered Poison the Well’s Slice, Paper, Wrists, which was such a fitting song for the band to play (musically) and they played it so well. It is always a pleasure to catch a Dead Kings show.
Mary Jane Kelly finished up the night with their rock’ n’ roll hardcore songs from their latest release Like There’s No Tomorrow. There is a lot of hype surrounding this band. They have been dubbed Australia’s Every Time I Die and when you watch them you can see why. Guitarist Matt Velozo is the real star of this band, the songs are well written and the guitar parts are incredible with epic blues riffs but are also technically stunning.
Vocalist Justin Bortington is a terrific singer and vocalist but the fact that they are called Mary Jane Kelly (presumably after the Jack the Ripper’s final victim) and he introduced one of the songs with “This is for everyone who hate’s their girlfriend”, gives him a bit of a Patrick Bateman vibe, but all jokes aside they are one of the best Australian bands around today and they live up to the hype.
