Perth was out in force at On The Bright Side to welcome back Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi, Albert Hammond, Nikolai Fraiture and Fab Moretti – collectively known as The Strokes. After an absence of six years, the punters under the big top waited anxiously to catch a glimpse of the kings of garage rock once again.
The appreciation was hard to deny when Casablancas made his way on stage to a massive roar, exclaiming “Hello Perth!!” before the boys smashed into the opening track of the set, New York City Cops, because these boys are New York City boys. The crowd roared their approval with the opening strains of Hard To Explain which followed a raucous rendition of The Modern Age.
Fresh from their tour of Europe The Strokes were finding it difficult to agree on the set list quickly correcting Casablancas when he announced the song Soma. They were about to play You Only Live Once. The massive crowd were treated to a little bit of Pacman on the big screen during Someday and the set was over with the brilliantly catchy Last Nite from the record dubbed best of the decade.
They didn’t leave the stage for long – returning with another favourite, Juicebox. The choice was ours for the second last track of the night, a competition between I Can’t Win and Heart in a Cage. Unsurprisingly Heart in a Cage was the overwhelming winner. They left us drenched in sweat with Take It Or Leave It.
Those of you lucky enough to have your hands on a precious sideshow ticket or even those travelling to Splendour are in for a real treat. Welcome back The Strokes with loving arms as they are sure to knock your socks off!
