The Enmore Theatre was abuzz with anticipation for The Beautiful Girls but until the main act reached the stage, support act Washington kept the enthusiasm alive. Fronted by Megan Washington, the band led the audience on a musical voyage, courtesy of songs from her latest release Rich kids. There was nothing pompous about the rich imagery and depth of songs such as Rich Kids, Five and Ten and 1997.
A quick change over and The Beautiful Girls were upon us, basking under the multi coloured stage lights with the rapturous applause before them. The set commenced with the roots based 10:10, the latest single from the current album Spooks. More reggae and roots followed via My Mind is An Echo Chamber and Wrong Side of Town.
Singer Mat McHugh led the vibe and displayed some lovely finger work on various tracks particularly Long Way Home. The electrifying performance conveyed did well to lift spirits and entice the audience to let their hair down.
Bassist Paul Bromley plucked away on bass as he lent his voice for backing vocals. Drummer Bruce Braybrooke, cementing the dynamics of the threesome, exerted equal energy.
Acoustic La Mar (The Ocean) from the debut album Learn Yourself was delicately sung with an audience eager to sing along. As this was the last show of the tour, the revs were raised and the night’s enchanting performance ended on the edgy Don’t Wait. The night’s performance was testimony to the show being sold out. Six albums later and the boys have secured their place as one of Australia’s hottest acts around.
