Wow! Karnivool are riding a huge wave right now that doesn’t look breaking any time soon and with two sold out shows at The Governor Hindmarsh surely is a testament to that. Ian Kenny is without doubt one of Australia’s most versatile front men literally finishing one tour off with his ‘other band’ The Birds Of Tokyo and after changing Tarago’s he’s back on the road with Karnivool who are enjoying just as much success, if not more, as the previously mentioned band.
MM9 were solid openers with their brand of industrial, electro infused hard rock. Highlights included the likes of SOSOS and They Murder but it Karnivool I was really hanging out to see.
The signs of a successful band who leaves nothing to compromise is evident with Karnivool bringing a massive PA and lighting system proving far superior to the in-house get up available making it feel like a massive rock show. The Gov was that packed punters were left scrambling for a good spot as the band took to the stage just after ten.
Emerging to stage shroud in darkness Karnivool ripped in to opening number Set Fire To The Hive like a devil possessed. It was hard not to feel the intensity right from the get go and at this point this show was going to be something to remember. Seeing a band on the second night of a double header can be a concern especially if the excesses of touring are enjoyed a little to much affecting the performance, not so for Karnivool. Goliath followed next as the band featured songs off the highly impressionable Sound Wake and their break through debut Themata.
It was interesting that there wasn’t a huge amount of interaction with crowd apart from the stock standard ‘how are you Adelaide’ and ‘are you going ok’ leaving the music to wow the socks off the full house at The Gov. Ian Kenny spent most of the show centre stage and I, like many of the other punters, could watch him for hours. The voice, his hand motions literally feeling the music and his eyes transfixed is really something captivating to watch.
The set list was amazing and there intensity continued to build as they took their fans on a journey. The Medicine Wears Off was a highlight and seemed to flow really well in to The Caudal Lure. The crowd were full of adulation and did go crazy for Deadman, Themata and Roqufort wheeled out in quick fire succession. Fade from the Persona EP got a good going over finishing off the main set with the expansive New Day.
The crowd were yelling “K A R N I V O O L” repeatedly and weren’t prepared to let them get away without an encore finishing off with the epic Change. Karnivool are pushing for the mantle of one of Australia’s best live acts, just watch!
