The Olympus room was packed out at the Hellenic Club last Thursday night for the smooth sounds of The Beautiful Girls.
On entry everyone found a spot on the carpet and relaxed waiting for support act Washington to grace the stage. With a “Hello” from the delightfully quirky Megan Washington, that was the cue for us all to stand and move in for a closer view. It was just her, as well as her keyboard which was necessary for her beautifully manufactured songs and soulful, heartfelt lyrics. With short stories and a background tale to some lyrics, it really was a surprisingly enjoyable set, as some punters around me discussed.
With a short interlude – on came headline act, The Beautiful Girls. Matt McHugh in fine form, his melodic voice and at times sensual guitar licks, the audience swayed and swooned as he played everything that the audience came to hear.
With older hits like I Thought about You and BlackBirds to their new singles off the Spooks album- 10:10 and Don’t Wait – we were jumpin’, groovin’, sliding and swayin’ our way through the night. During one of their song one ol’ mate got all ‘full of the moment’ during the bands rendition of Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight and decided a stage dive was in order…with the result not what he expected. A rather large dressing down by Matt McHugh and injuring the ladies in the front of the crowd. McHugh finished the tune, asked front of house to up the light to see if the young lady was in fact ok.
Other than this incident – the room was full of love, groove and appreciation for this Aussie outfit. Too long between drinks, I’m sure the crowd would be with me in saying that they should definitely bring their fine selves back soon.
