With one of the coldest winters one can remember, a night out baring the elements was not high on the list. Warm and comfy under a blanket, watching Sex and the City reruns or donning a multitude of garments whilst trying to protect a frostbitten nose? The choice was clear but the attraction at The Annandale was Regurgitator. Frostbite and scarves win hands down!

The show was sold out and patrons huddled like sardines in the venue to overcome the grief awaiting them outside. Step Panther, a threesome sounding something like Devo and The Pixies straight from Manchester resonated a fun and laid-back sound. Fight Like a Knight and Surf ricocheted an edgy surf sound as and I could have sworn I was at a Shadows concert for a moment. The sound is a fusion of influences, none overpowering and all blending surprising well.

Melbourne three piece Ouch My Face were equally enticing and front woman Celeste Potter was a marvel to watch – so much grunt for such a diminutive soul! Her voice was crisp and echoed the punk electronica vibe that radiated from bassist Steven Huff and drummer Ben Wundersitz. Many punters clambered to get a better look at who was hurling the grit; with Junk Punk Baby and Knockouts providing the highlights of the set.

Coming in from the north, Brisbane band Regurgitator received a thunderous welcome with all eyes transfixed on what frontman Quan Yeomans and his merry men would bring to the table. Touring on the back of their latest album Love and Paranoia singles Romance of the Dead and Blood and Spunk lavished in a hearty sing along. Bassist Ben Ely’s forte lay in backing up Yeomans’ vocals whilst submerging himself in bass beats.

Golden oldie Polyester Girl and newie My Friend Robot echoed electronica indie fun. Damn it was a fun night to sing along and reminiscent over the great songs this band threw at us, capturing youth, misdemeanours and just plain fun. Former Hard Ons drummer Peter Kostic kept the tempo afloat and one could have sworn he had been with the band since its formation, gelling effortlessly with the others.

Yeomans is an entertaining frontman, throwing anecdotes to the crowd as though they were old friends. It’s been a while since we last saw them and judging by the roar, they’re welcome to come again
