Operator Please, Tim & Jean,Chaingang @ Hi-Fi, Brisbane(2/07/2010)

Electro Indie Popsters Operator Please, Tim & Jean and Chaingang played to an almost packed Hi-Fi Bar on Saturday night.

However, due to a certain bomb threat on a certain public transport system, I was unable to make it to the gig in time for the first band of the night – Chaingang.

Perth indie 4-piece Tim & Jean kicked off their set with an instrumental song which in some parts sounded very similar to a gameboy but nonetheless kept the crowd interested. Their set continued with songs including Don’t Stop, Like What and set highlight Come Around. At times they sounded very similar to bands like Phoenix, Cut Copy and Passion Pit so it was clear who their influences are. They were entertaining to watch with a very different stage setup to most bands and they did what they had to, to keep the crowd amused.

Operator Please came onstage not long after and opened their set with Just Kiss from their new album Gloves to a more than welcoming crowd of punters. Onstage surrounding the Gold Coast 5-piece was some pretty fairy lights and balloons which gave off the feel of a themed birthday party. Their set continued with tracks off both albums Gloves and _ Yes, Yes Vindictive_, including Leave it Alone, Catapult, Jealous, This Time Around and their new single Like Magic. Get What You Want from their 1st album proved to be an early crowd pleaser along with Back & Forth, the second single from Gloves.

Lead vocals from Amandah Wilkinson were almost perfect all night and complimented the quirky guitar riffs she played. She also commented that Brisbane always has the best dancers which pleased the intoxicated happy punters who continued to dance the night away. Halfway through their set the band showcased an awesome mash up of Destiny’s Childs’ Lose My Breath and No Doubts’ Hella Good. As the set came to a close they played Zero Zero , a remix of Just a song about Ping Pong and Logic. Instead of then doing an encore the band called for the touring party to come onstage and perform their final song which was another unique mash up of a few songs including Push It, Milkshake and You Really Got me by Van Halen which closed the night on an incredible high. Although the band were spot on all night and every song was played almost perfectly, the show seemed like it was missing something and at times was a little too predictable but still enjoyable.
