Gyroscope @ HQ, Adelaide(17/06/10)

The band erupted into I Still Taste the Blood, the second track off their new Cohesion album, with the typical Gyroscope vigour we are used to. Crowd favourite Fast Girl got the crowd jumping, followed by a quick “Hello Adelaide” from the band, they cranked straight into Confidence in Confidentiality from their rockin’ debut. I’ve said it before but Gyroscope seriously is the Australia’s finest live band. They could be playing to a crowd of 5 or 5,000, and they would put in the same powerful performance every time. This was evident during next track What Do I Know About Pain. Lead singer/guitarist Dan Sanders decided part way through to leave the stage and perform the remainder of the song halfway down HQ. Lucky bassist Brad Campbell is competent with the lyrics and took centre stage to scream the remainder of the words.

A few tracks from the last couple of albums followed with These Days, All In One, 1981 and a much rockier version of Some of the Places. Next up was a treat for fans from their EP days, I’ve Been Struck By Lightning Once… off their Take Time EP from 2002 and boy did they put everything into it. They haven’t played it in seven years and dedicated it to Adelaide’s own The Hot Lies.

Somehow the impossible happened; they were able to take it up a notch. Doctor Doctor would have to go down as their best live tracks. Sanders swung his body and guitar around recklessly then flung himself onto the crowd and surfed for about five minutes while the crowd going berserk. A four song encore completed the show with current single Baby, I’m Getting Better, the sing-a-long Australia, the rocker Snakeskin and finally an explosive version of Don’t Look Now But I Think I’m Sweating Blood. Farkin’ brilliant yet again!
