After their 4 month stint in the US, Skybombers launched their brand new EP Love Me Like You Used To Do at favourite haunt Revolver Upstairs. This was done with the help of bands Dancing Heals, and The Pretty Littles, the openers for the night.
The Pretty Littles’ brand of straight-up rock was enthusiastic and infectious. They played like the room was full, even though there were maybe 25 people there at the time, and their vocalist bantered with the crowd throughout their set.
Dancing Heals took the stage afterward, a five-piece made from the ashes of local bands Sojourn and Dirty Pink Jeans. They played mellow indie-rock, with a keyboard adding a slightly softer element. There were two vocalists, who’s harmonies sounded effortless.
The men of the hour, Skybombers, finally hit the stage, but with a surprise guest: Luke Carlson (of now-defunct band Young Lovers) on keys. Unfortunately, the other instruments kept overpowering the sound of the keyboard, so it was very difficult to hear. The boys opened with Round Here (marred only by the fact that vocalist Hugh Gurney forgot to plug in his guitar), followed by Can’t Say No. Revolver was totally packed, so moving around was a bit of a chore, but people managed it, as the band played It Goes Off, followed by another new song. After that, Gurney announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, get sexy, this is Love Me Like You Used To Do!” And get sexy we did. Next up was oldie On + On, then a few technical difficulties, and another new one, All At Sea (from the new EP).
Daylight Savings followed, with two choice quotes from Hugh regarding the song: “I like to imagine girls dancing prettily, but sometimes I have an accident”, and “You know what they say about good dancers? They dance well…” My Morning’s Gone, and a cover of Groove Armada’s My Friend were next, with Black Carousel, Everybody and Jenny rounding out the set shortly after 12.30am.
