Creative Sydney Wrap Up Party@ MCA (13/06/10)

Walking into the Creative Sydney Wrap-Up Party at the MCA Sunday night I was greeted with the sweet pop sound of local Sydney band, Shady Lane. With a super relaxed vibe and the enthusiasm from lead singer Jordy Lane, their music made for the perfect ambience to what was going to be a truly intimate night of band playing and listeners drowning in their sounds.
The room was filled with all different band members and the rest of the crowd mingling in unison under the cool purple glow of the lights. The floor wasn’t at full capacity and there was a large an unnecessary gap between the stage and the crowd but as the night moved on the place filled up and the people were buzzed and ready for the music.
The next band to come on where local four-piece band, Songs who have a kind of hypnotic sound to them, with a little bit of percussion. You could certainly see the that the crowd were into them and you can definitely listen to them for hours straight, bopping your head along to the sweet mellow melody without getting bored. In one of their songs they played this mind-blowing repetitive riff and it wasn’t until after a minute or so you’d realised you’d actually been listening to the same thing and the crowd was really feeling it with their eyes fixed on them swaying along.
Richard In Your Mind were on next and everyone was pretty damn into these guys. Leading man Richard Cartwright was mastering stage barefoot and had the crowd transfixed with his voice. They seemed completely in their element playing on stage and it reflected in their music and the five of them (one of whom was Shady Lane’s front man, Jordy Lane) bounced of each other’s energy. They shared a bit of friendly banter and some words and a laugh with the audience in between songs too.
Next to take the stage were Sydney band Seekae who were undoubtedly perfect. An instrumental band, the trio produced a really raw, cool sound, reminiscent of something Animal Collective-inspired. You could tell they were digging what they were playing with their really strong and super loud beats, bopping up and down, and so was the crowd. It’s hard to put justice to what these guys do and they’re definitely a band to look out for.
The Paper Scissors where definitely the most creative on the night, making the most of the Sydney Creative Festival with claiming to be creative with almost everything they did which certainly gave a good laugh to the crowd, for instance, when drummer Ivan Charles Lisyak went to far to so claim “I’m being creative for fixing my drum pedal”. They brought some rock sounds to the evening and deserved more than the crowd they had with many people dispersing as they came on but still they played a great set and seemed genuinely upset when it was all over.
Last on stage, but obviously not least, were Cloud Control. They had everyone dancing and jumping all over place and if fun were a currency, people would’ve been in the riches. They played most of the songs off their recent album which most people recognised and sang along too. Midway through playing Ghost Story, the drummer from Richard In Your Mind came on playing a tin water jug or something of the like adding the beat and then too quickly it was over and they wrapped up their set.
The night was a great success with some ridiculously good music, and the crowds’ spirits died down once it had stopped and eventually filtered out of the MCA with the sounds ringing in their ears.
