Is there anything Ian Kenny cant do? The man with the melting vocals and the Midas touch and his gang of Birds of Tokyo flew back into Perth last Thursday and produced one of the greatest rock shows this little city has witnessed. No flashy lights, no smoke and mirrors, just an extremely awesome band serving up extremely awesome songs one after another. But first things first, Midnight Youth; Yes!
They were the perfect support band, and would have put any other headliner to shame. Their songs are catchy, their energy was perfect, and their drummer, well, he’s a show all on his own. He can twirl a stick mid solo and keep a beat with thin air, brilliant.
These Kiwi lads are something special, winding out an extremely impressive set with JJJ favourite All on our Own was a fine warm up to the marathon ahead.
After little time, the main men were at stage front, Birds of Tokyo had arrived, to rapturous applause from a jam packed, sold out, Metropolis City, they burst straight into current single The Saddest Thing I Know.
Very rarely do you take artists for their word, but when Kenny claimed “Its good to be home” you could feel the honesty in his voice, and the fans were very, very happy to have them back.
The wild ones slung through Wild Eyed Boy and brand spanking newy Wild At Heart before releasing another new ball-tearer on the adoring crowd Circles. Bring on the new album.
Ian Kenny is a funny one to watch; his joy is ever-present, and his dancing brings a smile, reminiscent of a less edgy Peter Garrett, he shone through crowd sing along Wayside. The feel good vibe continued through White Witch (which could have ended the show -it was that good), before another fresh song The Last Time had the crowd yearning for more.
Silhouettic rounded out the first set, before the ‘encore’ chants grew deafening, they returned to release Off Kilter on the moshers up front, before a rousing rendition of Broken Bones had the crowd taking over vocals.
A truly beautiful, simply awesome performance from a band who deserve every award and accolade they earn, concert of the year? I think so.
