Shaman Son, The Ovals,ZeaHorse @ Ding Dong,Melbourne (9/04/10)

Three rocking bands ripped Cherry bar apart and left the crowd in a broken disheveled state.

First band up were The Ovals, these guys resemble a mixture of all those great prog rock/Krautrock bands from the 70’s but with out the self indulgence. Their songs start off with slow beat that builds to a huge crescendo then drops like an atom bomb, Krautrock is one of the few genres that hasn’t had a ‘Come Back’ phase, we have 80’s plastic pop, to hair metal, but Kraut Rock has remained unexplored, so hopefully the Ovals will start an interest.

Next band up was Sydney band Zeahorses just off from a tour with Those Crooked Vultures, I can see why Josh Homme would have had these guys support them they have that same stoner classic rock sound to them, they burst through their short set with fiery energy and rocking tunes to smash the crowd apart.

The headlining band Shaman Son have built up a solid fanbase with Melbourne’s rock scene and also a solid reputation with the rock critics. These young guys are one of the best bands I have seen in along time, they combine elements of every great rock bands from the 90s but with a distinct sound of their own.

Every song that they played could easily be a hit, the lead singer Ted Dempsey has that classic rock voice that reminds me a lot of early silverchair, the band is going to be playing at the up coming Cherry Rock festival which will definitely build their fan base, these guys can only get bigger and better.
