Four years after the release of their first album, Perth local alternative rockers Mercurial released their latest album Inertia Tides at The Rosemount Hotel.

Newly formed Perth band Further Earth, featuring members of both Crysis and Rise Apollo, opened the night, playing their last show before settling into writing and recording their first EP. They have a tight, alternative rock sound and Ryan Carson’s vocals were undeniably incredible.

Chasing the Ninth introduced a heavier sound and showed themselves as another Perth band to keep an eye on. They were followed by Bat Country who released their own EP a couple of weeks ago, and appeared keen to let everyone hear their unique sound.

The lights dimmed and Mercurial began their set amidst screams and cheers from the audience which was now packed from wall to bar to wall again. Opening with Black Lodge, the mood was set for something different. The band played every song from their new album and had already gained some supporters who sang along to the previously released single, Ghosts. The more electronic and upbeat Intramural showcased Mercurial’s unique sound and demonstrated their intricate use of keyboard and synth.

Icarus Burn and Consecrate were well received by the audience but The Inertia Tides brought another wave of excitement that got the crowd going as it built from a melodic song into a much heavier piece as each instrument took up its place.

Front man Brent Tunbridge pulled out the acoustic guitar for the slow and sinful, The Absent, then onto Sutures which was one of the favourites of the night perfectly displaying Tunbridge’s powerful vocals and lyric writing ability.

As the band ended with the powerful Omerta, supporters went mental. Punters seemed to be extremely satisfied with the night’s performances, particularly the guest appearance by Mike Sukys from The Meaning Of.

When asked what he thought of the show, Tunbridge said:

“It was a good turnout and the audience response was really great. We had a great time… It’s really hard to wipe the smile off my face when I see people singing along to a song that’s only been out for a couple of weeks. It means we’re doing something right.”
