The Love Recession, The SpaceMachines @ The Front, Canberra(27/5/10)
Mon 31st May, 2010 in Gig Reviews
Last Thursday night, Canberra’s The Love Recession teamed up with Sydney-based UK friend The Space Machines for a smoking show at The Front.
UK one man computer band and singer/songwriter Geoff Widdowson is The Space Machines. Kicking off the night’s entertainment he played an eclectic mix of spontaneous tunes and a couple of songs from his self-titled debut LP. The genesis of The Space Machines began while Widdowson was “lost in the Joshua Tree Desert” after a tour across the US supporting James (the band) with some friends towards the end of the last decade. The Space Machines left us pondering how to write a song based on the word ‘um’ and at what speed do you actually travel through space and time…
After a short break five-piece locals The Love Recession took to thier instruments and belted out a nine song set to the packed crowds delight.
Highlights included set opener and crowd favourite, Friday Night, newie Brooklyn Nights, the brooding Silence, Smoke and Sin and the powerful set-closer Borderline Blues.
The boys introduced a new cover for this set, 90’s indie-band The Simpleton’s Crash Out. This ain’t just any cover with TLR bass player Brad Cheers the bass player for The Simpletons. The beautiful song and its lyrics suit the band well, particularly with the inclusion of the violin thanks to the multi-tasking Jeremy Sung. The ever modest singer/songwriter Steve Paillas noted after the track it was “A good song played badly”. Oh, we disagree!
Rumour has it the boys will be back in the garage studio in the coming month to have a crack at recording a few more tracks, with the hope of releasing an EP in the not too distant future.
Another cosy night at The Front providing its patrons with live local music and a place to sip tea.
