Mike Fielding aka DJ Naboo @QBar, Sydney (21/05/10)

What? Did someone say a life-sized stuffed cow as a dance floor centrepiece? Correct.

Such was the decor around Q-Bar, 34B and Vegas on Friday 21 May to mark the appearance (I won’t say performance) of Mike Fielding aka Naboo, of Might Boosh fame.

The DJ booth was set up as a Survivor-esque bamboo hut, with branches and leaves and all sorts of wonderful plant life and miscellaneous items hanging from the ceiling and adorning the stage. The random-objects-thrown-everywhere type affair was obviously fitting for a Mighty Boosh theme.

The music itself was unsurprisingly underwhelming. It’s no secret that Fielding isn’t actually a musician, but he didn’t really try hard to convince anyone either. There was no mixing of tracks – at all.

The playlist felt more like a creepy uncle throwing on an iPod at 2am at a wedding; some classics, but a lot of cringeworthy moments. It probably doesn’t help that Fielding kind of looks like someone’s creepy uncle; he just happens to do so in a very endearing way. If lucky enough to catch a glimpse of him behind the 75 staunch security guards manning the five metre wide stage (and he’s vertically challenged at the best of times), one felt an overwhelming desire to just squeeze his little cheeks.

Despite nothing brilliant musically from Naboo, this was undoubtedly one of the best parties of the year so far. Alice in Wonderland and Joyride ( Sosueme DJs ) ensured the tightly packed crowd was energised and dancing before Naboo started, and continued partying (read: straddling aforementioned cow) long after the bite-sized Brit had gone.

The effort put into costumes by nearly every punter was truly extraordinary, making for an electric atmosphere that occurs when people dress up as shamans and gorillas and consume a lot of alcohol. While the tickets may have been a bit expensive considering the lack of actual musical talent on display, it was a party that won’t be matched for awhile.

Lesson learnt: Electric Six, face paint, $6 buckets and the odd crack fox is a recipe for a delicious Friday night.
