Screamin Stevie, The Fuss,Fushia, Scarletto @ GlobeTheatre, Brisbane (22/05/2010)

On this reviewer’s first visit to Brisbane, I insisted on visiting the clubs favoured by locals and made my way to The Globe Theatre in Fortitude Valley. Club shows in Brisbane consist of four acts as opposed to the two to three favoured in Sydney, where a big night ends at 11.30pm. Brisbane is a breeding ground for great Aussie talent. It must be something in the moist air that churns them out such as local act Scarletto.

The cosmic foursome produced some ethereal licks such as Blind Man Jam and Monster Jam. They were a nice prelude to an act that really took my breathe away – Fushia. These local boys were a joy to watch as I lay back and took in a few Coronas. The ambience was a little sombre, with next to no one in the crowd but the band more than made up for this with a high voltage performance. Eraser and Say When were smoking.

Third on the bill was The Fuss. The look was hard rock but the feel was “seen and heard it before” as songs washed into the other and the set became monotonous. Perhaps it was the refreshing brute of Fushia, but I failed to get into this.

A few beers, an elevating floor and the audience was in full flight by the time Screamin’ Stevie and The Credit Union hit the stage. Stevie projected his suave lyrics with ease as the band did well to support, working nicely together. The two notable songs Make It On Time and Four Flights Up sounded great and worked well among lesser known tracks. Guitarist Bruce Graham impressed with some nice fingerwork that sounded great against harmonica and Ed Reynold ’s drums. Screamin Stevie and co. solidified that Brisbane is a rocking place to be!
