There aren’t a lot of gigs around that challenge you with every set played, but Ball Park Music’s lineup for their EP launch was certainly special. Kicking off the night was Tin Can Radio, Brisbane’s young art punkers. With a set list including And then Nothing, Chubby and new singles including the jivey Hot Trash, Tin Can Radio are fast rising as a band to watch. Their impressive energy and talent for building tension topped with trumpets are remarkable, and it’s a sure bet that they’ll be headlining soon.

Blame Ringo follow, with their flip-coin style of laid back sixties-esque poprock and quick paced bopping sound. Their vocal harmonies are, as always, relaxed but strong, with a warm sound that suits their sharp style. New single At the Inbetween, given away with purchases of Ball Park Music’s EP, has great potential, and while the set list doesn’t build the same kind of nervous tension Tin Can Radio does, it’s still highly engaging.

Ball Park Music take the stage for a most eclectic and entertaining set. Kicking it off with fan favourite Culture Vultures in the Year 2008 the band worked the crowd, throwing EPs into its mass and intermittently inciting overhead claps and sing-alongs. Along with a very well chosen cover of All Day and all of the Night from The Kinks they belted out older and new songs off not only their new EP but also from a planned additional one due for later. Displaying a somewhat heavier sound in some of their new tracks (like Tick Tock) they also invited on stage a saxophone, which although a nice touch didn’t really add to the sound as much as busying it up. With their impressive rock leaps and always interesting hair, Ball Park Music are hot on the heels of other rising Brisbane bands and will not stay a local secret for long.

If this reviewer had to describe a genre for the night, really, it would have to be pure awesome. Nothing else would cover it as succinctly.
